One of the most amazing sauces that Japanese people love is Tartar sauce. Made from Japanese mayonnaise, some onions, and eggs. This can add lots of flavor to a dish!

Have you had Tartar sauce? It’s usually added to deep fried dishes. I had tartar sauce for the first time when I ordered Noriben (のり弁) at a Japanese bento chain store, Hotto Motto (ほっともっと). Their Noriben was my favorite bento when I was a high school student. Every weekend after finishing tennis practice at school, me and my friends went to the bento store and ordered Noriben which has tartar sauce as a topping.

What is Tartar sauce?

Tartar sauce is a sauce that combines chopped boiled eggs, onions, parsley, pickled cucumbers, and is seasoned with mayonnaise. Serve with deep fried dishes.

Where is Tartar sauce from?

It is said that the name of ‘Tartar sauce’ came from what eastern Europeans called the Mongolian nomadic tribe, Tatarin. But there is no relation between Tatarin and tartar sauce.

The reason why Tatarin is the origin of the name of Tartar sauce is because of their food, tartar steak, that is made of ground meat and some minced vegetables, uses a sauce that is similar to Tartar sauce.

What ingredients do I need for making Tartar sauce?

Tartar sauce is so simple to make. Some households or restaurants make their own tartar sauce but the basic ingredients that you need for this sauce for sure are,

  • mayonnaise
  • eggs
  • minced vegetables

I recommend you use Japanese mayonnaise for this sauce to be close to the tartar sauce that is enjoyed in Japan.
