Ebi Mayo is a great side dish! The secret lies in coating these shrimp with a flavorful mayonnaise-based sauce. To achieve that creamy and soft taste, we recommend adding authentic Japanese mayonnaise and a touch of milk. This is loved by every generation, but kids especially adore it!

How to make Mayonnaise marinated Shrimps

This milky delicious side dish is called Ebi Mayo and it can be your addiction! I am a big fan of shrimp and I can’t stop eating this side dish by itself or with rice!

 What is Ebi Mayo

Ebi means shrimp and Mayo means mayonnaise. The sauce is based on mayonnaise with added milk, ketchup, and some ingredients. Just like Ebi Chili, it is made by covering with the sauce and super easy to make! The mayonnaise-based sweet seasoning is especially popular with children.

The popular shrimp side dish Ebi Chili is a Chinese food that was made to suite Japanese taste, but Ebi Mayo was born in Japan and not found in authentic Chinese food.

How to Prepare Shrimp Before Using

I always use Costco’s tail-on peeled raw shrimp for this recipe. Depending on which shrimp you use but here is the step of how to prepare for Ebi Mayo.

  1. Defrost the shrimps in a bowl of water.
  2. After defrosting, remove tail and vein.
  3. Then, add the shrimp and Katakuriko (potato starch) to a bowl. Mix thoroughly.
  4. Add water to the bowl and mix, then rinse with water again. Repeat until the water stays clear.
  5. Place the shrimp on a paper towel to remove excess water completely.

These are the steps to prepare the shrimp before using them. Katakuriko helps clean the shrimps.

Ingredients for making Ebi Mayo

Ingredients for making Ebi Mayo is

  • shrimp
  • potato starch or Katakuriko for covering
  • starch or Katakuriko for cleaning
  • salt
  • freshly ground black pepper
  • sake

Sauce

  • whole milk
  • Japanese mayonnaise
  • ketchup
  • sugar
  • scallion (green onion)

For the best results, I recommend using Japanese mayonnaise instead of other varieties. You can find Japanese mayonnaise on Amazon, but all the other ingredients can be purchased at your local grocery store.
